Did you just hear about people called birth doulas? There are several types of doula, but we’re going to focus on mainly birth doula work, along with a brief overview of prenatal and postpartum doula work. Before we dive deeper into this short guide, here's something to keep in mind, there is scientific research that confirms having continuous support, like a doula, significantly enhances birthing experiences with improved labor and delivery outcomes!
What is a Birth Doula

The word “doula” is the ancient Greek word “servant-woman.” No matter how one identifies themselves, anyone can be a doula. A birth doula is a non-medical professional who is well-equipped with the resources and tools to help you through your pregnancy and birth. Alongside providing pregnancy and birth care, some birth doulas specialize in other areas such as: lactation, nutrition and yoga.
Understanding the Work of Birth Doulas
Birth doulas support individuals throughout their pregnancy journey, assisting in planning and preparing for birth. They offer continuous care, tailored to the needs and preferences of the birthing person. Equipped with a range of comfort techniques and resources, doulas serve as guides, creating safe and comforting birthing experiences. The following areas highlight the practices common to all doulas.
Emotional Support:
Collaboratively creating a birth plan tailored to your preferences.
Providing resources and education about the birthing process.
Addressing any fears or concerns you have about labor and delivery.
Comfort and Care:
Remaining by your side throughout pregnancy and labor, offering continuous emotional, mental, physical support and informational support.
Using comfort measures like massage, breathing techniques, and positioning to manage pain during pregnancy, labor and birth.
Ensuring a calm and positive birthing environment.
Informational Support:
Acting as your advocate, ensuring your wishes are well respected and communicated to the medical team.
Facilitating communication between you, your partner, and healthcare providers.
Educating you about autonomy to address your preferences and needs.
Advocacy and Communication:
Encouraging effective communication techniques with your support system and medical team.
Providing postpartum support, including breastfeeding assistance and emotional guidance.
Following up after birth to debrief the experience and offer additional support as needed
The Benefits of Hiring a Birth Doula
Having a birth doula by your side during childbirth can make a big difference in how you feel and the outcome of your birth. Research has shown that having a birth doula can lead to many positive outcomes, such as:
Reduced Risk: Lower rates of cesarean sections, premature births and other medical interventions mean a safer, more natural birth for you and your baby.
Quicker Labor: With a doula's support, labors tend to be shorter, making the birthing process smoother and more efficient.
Less Pain: Doulas are trained to provide comfort measures that can reduce the need for pain medication, helping you have a more comfortable birth experience.
More Satisfaction: Having a doula can lead to increased satisfaction with your birth experience, as you feel more self-assured and supported throughout the process.
Better Breastfeeding: Doulas can offer guidance and support with breastfeeding, increasing the likelihood of success and a positive start to your breastfeeding journey.
By having a doula as part of your birth team, you can experience these benefits and more, ensuring an ecstatic and positive birth experience for you and your baby.
The Need for Birth Doulas

The rise in infant mortality rates in the United States has led to a significant increase in the number of birth doulas worldwide, particularly in the United States. This trend is driven by the growing awareness of the disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes, which are often linked to systemic issues such as racial, gender, age, and employment status inequalities.
All women are affected by these disparities, with a total maternal mortality rate of 32.9 deaths per 100,000 live births. However, Black women face the highest risk, with a rate of 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, which is three to four times higher than the rate for White women (26.6 deaths per 100,000 live births). Similarly, the infant mortality rate in the U.S. is 5.60 deaths per 1,000 live births, with Black infants (10.86 deaths per 1,000 live births) and American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) infants (9.06 deaths per 1,000 live births) experiencing the highest rates compared to Asian (3.50 deaths per 1,000 live births) and White infants (4.52 deaths per 1,000 live births).
This troubling trend has highlighted the need for additional support and advocacy during pregnancy and childbirth, leading to an increased demand for birth doulas. Birth doulas play a crucial role in providing physical, emotional, and informational support to expectant mothers, especially those facing higher risks. Their presence can help improve birth outcomes and provide a sense of security to women during the childbirth process.
As awareness of these disparities continues to grow, the importance of birth doulas in ensuring safe and equitable birth experiences for all women is becoming increasingly recognized. Through their support, birth doulas are helping to address the underlying issues contributing to these alarming statistics and working towards a future where every woman and infant has access to the care and support they need.
